It is a lovely spot in downtown Monterey...now. When this walled garden was first enclosed, 200 years ago, it was used as a fighting ring where bulls were pitted against Grizzley bears. The balcony above was the observation deck where the men would gather to watch the "sport". Hard to imagine that happening now in that beautiful walled garden. The walls around the original, old, adobe homes in Monterey were built primarily to keep Grizzley bears out. m
This reminds me of the feel and vision of Santa Barbara: peaceful, warm, beautiful.
